Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities. This can include conditions such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and strokes, as well as pain or disability due to muscle, ligament or nerve damage. A physician having completed training in this field may be referred to as a physiatrist.

Dr. Cottrell evaluates, treats, and manages acute and subacute musculoskeletal injuries that cause disabling pain and functional impairment. She is an expert in designing comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans utilizing innovative as well as time-tested treatments that maximize functional recovery and improve quality of life.
Outside of the office, Dr. Cottrell enjoys traveling with family and friends, exercising, playing tennis, and investing time in activities that promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Roderica Cottrell, MD is a physiatrist who has provided non-operative musculoskeletal care to patients in the Atlanta area since 2006. She specializes in the conservative and non-surgical treatment of painful orthopedic conditions, interventional spine procedures, and musculoskeletal medicine. Dr. Cottrell completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1998, followed by receipt of her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2002. She relocated to Atlanta, GA in 2003 to complete her residency training at Emory University. She is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a diplomate of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Cottrell prides herself on providing “patient-first” care with a focus on treating the whole person, and has been recognized for excellent patient care as demonstrated by the receipt of multiple awards including 2020 Top Doctors in Orthopedic Surgery; Atlanta Magazine 2018 Top Regional Doctors in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Castle Connelly Top Doc Award 2014, 2015, and 2016; Top Regional Doctor in Orthopedic Surgery 2016; and Emory University, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Award for Academic Excellence.
